This is the meticulous application of thin sheets of gold leaf onto a surface.
Antique and even contemporary frames often have gilding to brighten the surrounds of an artwork. There are several methods of gilding, each with different results that may be of a particular preference depending on the surface appearance you wish to see. This requires a delicate touch, with caution taken to guide the gold onto the desired surface.
